PC Systems
- Operating System - Your PC operating system should be at least Windows 8.1 or higher (full version, not RT or mobile). Microsoft no longer supports Windows 8. It is best to upgrade to a newer operating system if possible.

- “Windows Update” - It is also important that you run “Windows Update” to ensure you have all the latest security patches and updates. Follow the steps below:
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Depending on which Control Panel view you use, Classic or Category, do one of the following:
- Click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
- Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
- Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is not turned off.
- Hardware -
- Processor (Central Processing Unit) – minimum 2GHz CPU
- Storage (hard drive)– minimum 250 Gigabytes
- RAM (Random Access Memory) minimum 4+ Gigabyte (8+ Gigabyte preferred)
Mac Systems
- Operating System - Your Mac operating system should be at least Big Sur (11.7) or higher. Apple no longer supports Big Sur. It is best to upgrade to a newer operating system if possible.
- Hardware -
- Processor (Central Processing Unit) – minimum 2GHz CPU
- Storage (hard drive)– 250 Gigabytes (minimum)
- RAM (Random Access Memory) 4+ Gigabyte minimum, 8+ preferred
Other Hardware and Equipment
- Graphics card
- Monitor capable of 1280 X 1024 display or better
- Audio capabilities with speakers and/or headset
- Microphone may be needed for select courses (check with your instructor)
- Web cam may be required in some classes (check with your instructor)
Connectivity
- Must have regular access to reliable high-speed internet service:
- Providers offering fiber connections include - AT&T, Cox, T-Mobile, TDS, Lake Region, CenturyLink, EarthLink, Frontier, etc.
- Note: Satellite-based or cell phone ‘hot spot’ connections are typically unstable
Internet Browser
- Google Chrome is highly recommended (version 109 or higher). You may also use the following browsers, but performance may be adversely affected:
- Firefox (9 or higher)
- Safari (16.6 or higher)
- Edge (109 or higher)
Software
- Microsoft 365 (which includes the online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is available to RSU students at no cost. Login with your RSU email address and password at https://www.office.com/.
